Grade Calculator

Calculate weighted course grade from assignments and exams

What is it and how does it work?

A grade calculator computes your current or final grade from assignment scores, handling weighted grading systems where different assessments count for different percentages of the final grade. Most courses use weighted grading: exams might be 40%, homework 30%, quizzes 20%, and participation 10%. Simply averaging raw scores without accounting for these weights gives a misleading result — this calculator does the weighting correctly.

Beyond the current average, the tool answers the "what score do I need?" question: given your current grade and how much of the course is left, it calculates the minimum score you need on the remaining work to achieve your target final grade. This helps you decide whether a goal is realistic and how much effort to allocate to remaining assessments.

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

What is a weighted average grade?

A weighted average gives each component a different importance. If homework is 20% of the grade and you score 100, and exams are 80% and you score 60, your weighted average is (100×0.20) + (60×0.80) = 68 — not (100+60)/2 = 80. Ignoring weights overstates performance on low-weight components.

How do I calculate what I need on the final exam?

Required final score = (target grade − current grade × current weight) ÷ remaining weight. For example, need 80% overall, have 75% with 70% of grade done, final is 30%: (80 − 75×0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 52.5) ÷ 0.30 = 91.67%.

What is a grade point and how does it relate to letter grades?

Grade points assign numeric values to letter grades for GPA calculation. Most US universities use: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, etc. GPA = sum of (grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours.

My professor drops the lowest score — how does that affect the average?

When the lowest score is dropped, exclude it from both the numerator (sum of scores) and denominator (number of scores, or total weight). The calculator lets you mark individual assignments to exclude from the calculation.
