Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences and estimate reading time

What is it and how does it work?

A word counter instantly counts the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in any text, and estimates how long it takes to read. Whether you are writing an essay with a strict word limit, a meta description capped at 160 characters, a tweet, or an article with a target length, counting by hand is impossible and most editors hide these statistics behind menus. Paste or type your text and every metric updates live as you edit.

The reading-time estimate is based on an average reading speed of around 200–250 words per minute, the same method used by Medium and most publishing platforms. Like every TooliaVerse tool, the counter runs entirely in your browser: your text is never uploaded, which makes it safe for confidential drafts, contracts or unpublished work.

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

How is a "word" counted?

Any sequence of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word. Numbers, abbreviations and words with hyphens count as single words — the same convention used by word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

How accurate is the reading time?

It assumes an average adult reading speed of roughly 200–250 words per minute. Actual time varies with text complexity and reader, but it is the standard estimate used by blogs and publishing platforms.

Does the character count include spaces?

The tool shows both metrics: characters with spaces and characters without. Platforms differ — Twitter counts spaces, some forms don't — so having both saves guesswork.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens locally in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, saved or logged, so the tool is safe for private or unpublished writing.
